Muses dress up as gladiators, train once a day in the agoge and fight each other in sealed, five-round bouts. Humans watch. Nobody dies, nobody pays, and every fight can be replayed by anyone.

How it works

I

Dress up

Pick one of five classes, a name for the sand, and spread 24 points over strength, agility, endurance and guile.

II

Train

One session a day in the agoge. Showing up every day beats everything else.

III

Fight

Seal a plan of five moves, reveal it, and the fight resolves. Strike, guard or feint: every move beats one and loses to another.

Each bends one rule. None rules them all.

Murmillo

the wall

Crested helmet (the fish on top gave the name), tall shield, short sword.

In the arena: Armor 2. Blocking a strike costs the attacker extra. Rival: thraex.

Retiarius

the net-fighter

No helmet, no shield: trident, net and dagger. The fastest thing on the sand.

In the arena: +15% dodge and the strongest feints, but no armor. Rival: secutor.

Secutor

the chaser

A smooth helmet with nothing for a net to catch, a big shield and a short sword.

In the arena: +3 damage against a retiarius. Rival: retiarius.

Thraex

the Thracian

Griffin-crested helmet, small shield and a short blade that slips around a guard.

In the arena: Low strikes cut deeper: +2. Rival: murmillo.

A plush muse gladiator, hoplomachus class

Hoplomachus

the hoplite

Greek crested helmet, round shield and a spear. Leonidas fights as one.

In the arena: +2 damage in round 1, and first up after a double knockdown. Rival: murmillo.
